The Club Syllabus

Below are listed the basic requirements to progress to the belt in the title of the paragraph. With each higher grade requiring the new skills, and those listed for previous grades.

As well as these skills, the student will be required to be able to answer increasingly harder and more detailed questions about karate and its history, the student will be required to be well versed in dojo ettiquette, even from and early stage.

Requirements for 9th Kyu

An introduction into the world of karate and the journey begins with an insight into the art of self-defence. At the end of this module, the student will be able to show a basic understanding of blocking, punching, kicking and grappling techniques, how to deal with an aggressive person and how to 'stand their ground'. The student will also be aware of the club rules.

Requirements for 8th Kyu

Building upon the successes of part 1 and having achieved the first step on their journey, the student will move from basic techniques to those incorporating double movements and close quarter reaction work. Breathe control both during movement and rest will be introduced along with personal discipline and conduct.

Requirements for 7th Kyu

Following the successful completion of Fundamental Skills I & II, the student now moves onto study aspects of the more traditional forms of karate. Demonstration of a keen mind and the ability to learn basic forms, kata and combinations will be required.

Requirements for 6th Kyu

With a good understanding of basic techniques, the student now learns how to work in harmony with a partner. Emphasis is placed upon co-ordination, control and placement.

  • Requirements for 5th kyu

    Students will now consider movement, timing and power incorporating the control and restraint of a moving opponent. Multiple moves come naturally at this point, demonstrating control over oneself and their adversary.

    Requirements for 4th Kyu

    Taking the moves learned at Fundamental and Intermediate stages, training is focused on pair work. Speeds of techniques are increased and the art of kumite explored to a deeper level. Students will need to work in conjunction with each other to improve their skills.

    Requirements for 3rd kyu

    An awareness of forces generated by movement enables the student to effectively redirect power from their opponent. Traditional karate basics provide the realisation of respect for one another. Introduction of the 'Ancient Katas'

    Requirements for 2nd kyu

    Continued training with multiple partners, skills will be reactive in nature. Understanding of body mechanics enables greater control over techniques received and given. An understanding of Rokushu and its applications for 1st Dan.

    Requirements for 1st kyu

    Students prepare to take their final step towards black belt. A desire and passion for their training must be demonstrated. A commitment to the development of lower grades will show them worthy of the acclaim attached to the achievement of shodan.
